Read & Learn

I definitely love the notion of being a lifelong learner. I have been an information seeker long before my librarian days. I want to share my knowledge seeking activities with all of you.

I’ve been using Goodreads for over 10 years to track my reading. I set a challenge for myself every year, whether that be a number of books to read or a certain genre of books to read. It’s been fun to give each year of reading a bit more direction.

Check out my 2023 Reading Challenge where I set a goal to read a repeating cycle of 5 genres, aiming for one cycle per months.

In 2024, I set the initial goal to wipe out my current Goodreads TBR list. Follow along on my reading journey!

2023 was a banner year for me and reading challenges. I set an interesting goal of reading a repeating cycle of five genres, initially intending to complete one cycle per month. 60 books in total, a modest number compared to my usual books-per-year average. The genres did not have to be read in any particular order, but I couldn’t read another book in the same genre until all five genres had been met. The five genres I chose were: adult fiction, children’s fiction (chapter books), young adult fiction, graphic novels (adult, young adult, or children’s), and non-fiction (adult or young adult).

I made it through 14 cycles by December 18. I didn’t have it in me to finish a 15th cycle, so I pivoted to devouring the ACOTAR series before the end of the year. Despite the nearly 2,500 pages in the remaining four books I had to read, I finished Silver Flames on December 30th! And now I will sit impatiently along with the rest of the fantasy romance loving book community and wait for Sarah J. Maas to deliver the next installment.

You can check out my 2023 year in books on Goodreads. My favorite book of the year was easily Breath by James Nestor. Everyone who breathes should read that book! I have several posts planned to dissect the book and discuss some of Nestor’s methods that I have started to incorporate in my daily life.

And now for 2024… I won’t do the genre thing again, and I’m not even certain how many books I want or think I can read. I’ll probably start with 52, aiming for 1 per week. I’ll likely increase it later in the year. Thank goodness you can edit reading challenges on Goodreads! I will start by reading all of the books currently on my TBR list on Goodreads. I will not allow myself to add any additional books until all those are read. (Although there’s a good chance I will cheat by recording a TBR in an Apple Note.) There’s currently 30 books on my Goodreads TBR. Two of them don’t release until later in 2024, so I’ll skip those until they are released.

    So here we go…2024…happy reading!
